ALL THE NONBLACKS TO THE BACK!!

Again, so much for consistency hehe. Bite-sized post since this song has been on my mind ever since it came out!

I won't lie, I'm a bit late to the Monaleo train, but her pinked out wedding just kinda-sorta put her on my radar.

Sexy Soulaan meshes themes of unity within the black community that I fear we've been needing. It has always, and unfortunately will be a controversial standpoint to simply be proud to be black. Which is only something you can be bothered by if you let it. I'd say that within the black community (mostly Black Americans) the sort of things that get us active are just downright idiotic discussions that a song about proudly proclaiming blackness alone just feels refreshing.

Not only is it proudly proclaiming blackness but it's not starting a pointless diaspora war, which are too few and far between. As a people there's sometimes way too much time spent attempting to spoonfeed ignorant nonblacks about the culture. Which is like, NOOOOO!!! A lot of times there's really no point, especially in this day in age where people will just continue to be willingly ignorant, to attempt to explain why some things are just the way that they are. You don't have to be pliant, educating, or assimilating. There's more to be explored within your own culture instead of babying the people stepping on our toes. They have a lot of their own time to look stupid, and that's just that. In these trying times where literally everything seems expensive, the most freeing thing is experiencing a life through community and culture.

Just some bite-sized thoughts that turned into a spiral because of this song. Thanks for reading, I'll be back soon..maaaybe?

introduction posttttt?

Hi and welcome! If you're seeing this post then you've either found one of my posters or have located this blog by other nefarious means. No matter how you got here, I wish to extend a warm welcome to this little place that will be my writing home for however long!

Okay. Well. This place has picked up dust as you can see from the last post dates. A bit awkward, nonetheless. But while I am working on finding a new home for this blog (GOD WHY DOES HTML TAKE 5 F!@&*! DAYS TO LOAD!!!) I'd like to give a brief introduction, which seems fair.

I'm Samir!! WOO WOO! I'm an 18 year old biology major who really just loves to ramble about music and many other primary things of interest. I'm not so interested in speaking about myself, and I prefer to let the music, pictures, or many other forms of art to do the talking. Intrinsically, this blog is not on schedule, so keep in mind that posts may be sparse or spontaneous. Depends. Also, I am heavily visually impaired so all posts will either be wide or bold for visibility~~

Uh, I write. Clearly. And I draw. If you wanna check out one-of-my-many tumblr sideblogs, here's a good place to start. Down the line I try to keep things accessible by linking music. If you don't like listening to music on youtube, then a different playlist can be madeee..

Rundown of the blog

This blog is not focused on rating music. For many, many reasons! The main reason being that music taste is objective, my 5star album isn't your prized album, and vice versa. I love engaging in discussion and recommendation, and I feel that the element of ever so definitively calling something trash outright is unfair and takes from the experience itself. I wouldn't tell you if my house had rats because you'd probably never want to eat in my kitchen. :P
Full album reviews depend on interest as a whole. Even if not interested, Samir still tries to find the positives within! Which are usually many because there's always something nice to be found in even the worst piles of rubbish. Hope we can find a common ground of taste, and exposure remains endless.

UM, THIS PLACE ALSO PROBABLY LOOKS HORRIBLE ON MOBILE!

Why Blog?

I wanted to have an outlet that feels more productive than keeping my ramblings to myself. If I could find this much within music, then why not put myself out there? Blah, blah, blah. I'm heavily introverted and cannot bear rambling face to face. This solves that absolute burning feeling.

Primary interests
Things that will be referenced heavily throughout this blog A.K.A dear Samir's interests, musically and not.
  • Fiona Apple
  • Erykah Badu
  • Frank Ocean
  • Groove Theory
  • Interview With The Vampire
  • James Cameron's Avatar
  • Outkast
  • Memphis Rap (Project Pat, HCP, etc etc. This list would be a novel if I recorded all of that.)

This concludes the introduction. This is for housekeeping and whatnot. In the meantime while waiting for a new post you could possibly view my older blurbs. I apologize in advance for old writing.

you are also very welcome to contact me on instagram, @herinnersanctity or fill out my review interest form.

No One Wants to Be The Negro Swan

More often than past times are young black women, much like myself, embracing eccentricity. In a world where style is so personal, the ‘weird’ black girl has often been a trope that people embraced because it’s so close to reality. A lot of us are considered out of the norm and are often afraid of embracing it for whatever reason it may be. One common reason may be fearing not being accepted. Rejection is crippling and feels like the end of the world when all you want to be is yourself.

Acceptance starts with you. Because you should choose yourself before killing yourself for the validation of people who won’t look your way past the cool outfits and surface level interests. People often conflate what is deemed as ugly to be morally wrong, Which is a whole topic in itself—but as a girl who is BLACK BLAAACKITY black, after living years as the weird, quiet girl, you realize:

Nobody really wants to be weird.

Or the odd one out. At first it seems cool, but slap being black on top of it and suddenly it’s not the wave anymore. If you were on Instagram during a certain time period, during maybe 2017-19 you'd remember your Bhad Bhabies and dooozens of white people biting off of black culture and then loudly screaming that "NO ONE WANTS TO BE BLACK ANYWAY!" on Instagram-live rants.

No big deal if you don't really remember it, you'll see it happening a lot today, so long as you have a pair of eyes.

What does it have to do with anything? Well, these are just some thoughts I've had while listening to Charcoal Baby by Blood Orange.

To me, the song is about not limiting yourself because of things you can't change. A black swan in a sea of white swans is, very much the feeling of a black person in alternative circles or just trying to exist at all. It's okay to feel left out but know that, sometimes people just won't accept you.

Just go where you feel wanted and needed.
